For years, the Global White Lion Protection Trust has been appealing to the South African Government to have the White Lions protected from barbarous canned hunting malpractices, whereby lions and other endangered wild animals are bred in cages for killing. Finally, after mounting pressure from ourselves and other environmental and animal welfare groups, the Government has taken action, and has proposed the future prohibition of canned hunting in this country. However, under the proposed new legislation, hunting of lions in private reserves will still be allowed.
The fact is that there is still no legislation to protect the white lions from being completely eradicated from the wild.
In the face of ongoing threats to the White Lions' survival, the Global White Lion Protection Trust has made an urgent submission to the South African Government and continue to work with Government at various levels - local, regional and national - to prompt appropriate action for the White Lions' protection.
