The Global White Lion Protection Trust regrets to announce the loss of Marah, the first white lioness to return to her natural habitat in the Timbavati region.
Marah, who was leading the White Lion reintroduction, had impressed researchers with her hunting prowess, having achieved more than 82 successful kills since her release in April last year. A champion against formidable odds, Marah died while hunting with her offspring. She had perfected the technique of digging out warthogs from their deep underground burrows, and a week before her death was captured on film killing three warthogs in a single night. Following recent rains, one such burrow caved in on her, trapping her inside. With the risks involved in hunting in the wild, lion mortality is high - 80% of lion cubs do not survive to become adults. This natural event highlights the urgency of the continued protection of the White Lions who face extinction in their natural habitat. The Global White Lion Protection Trust's team is focused now on the survival of Marah's three-and-a-half year old sub-adult offspring, who learnt their hunting techniques from their mother. The three offspring have all hunted successfully on their own, killing prey as large as adult wildebeest. The scientific reintroduction is continuing as planned, with the lions' natural prey base being increased, and the long-term objective of integrating the White Lions with free-roaming tawny lions within their natural endemic range.
