Surprisingly, many people still prefer to donate to so-called 'adoption' programs of animals held in captivity, forgetting the substantial costs involved in ensuring the authentic and challenging conservation of rare animals where they belong: in their threatened endemic habitat.

We are a Non-Profit Organisation, and rely entirely on our circle of friends and responsible members of the public to support our conservation efforts.

In order for you to participate and assist us, we now have set up a Days of Freedom * program, whereby our friends can donate towards the survival of a particular chosen White Lion in their endemic habitat of the Timbavati region, by picking any day of the year to cover the inherent costs for his/her day of freedom in the wild.

Our long-term conservation efforts have created a non-commercial protected area of 2500 Acres for the White Lions in their natural homelands. This area will be increased once more neighboring land is incorporated into the White Lion conservancy and/or fences are removed with neighboring conservation areas.

Ensuring the White Lions’ survival at this stage of their reintroduction means we have to restock the lions' habitat with herds of wildebeest, zebra and kudu (a male lion consumes on average one wildebeest/kudu every five days at approx. $200 to $380 a time); we have to maintain approx. 40 kilometres of electrified fencing (perimeter and internal); we have anti-poaching border patrols by trained field security guards ensuring the lions' safety from hunters and poachers; and we also have a dedicated monitoring vehicle and a scientific team lead by lion ecologist Jason Turner, monitoring the lions twice daily.

These are some of the costs of ensuring the White Lions' survival and freedom. Many of our dedicated staff, however, give their time and expertise voluntarily.

On our side, for each Day of Freedom * which you generously sponsor, our scientific monitoring team will give you a REPORT BACK on your lion's activities for that particular day in the wild. This way, you’ll have a window into the life of the White Lion you are helping to protect in their natural habitat.

From all of us here at the Tsau White Lion Protection Centre, thank you again for assisting us in protecting a global heritage where it belongs - in the wild of its natural endemic habitat of the greater Timbavati region.

* One Day of Freedom is calculated according to actual predation and veterinary costs, anti-poaching activities, fence maintenance, re-stocking of prey-animals, essential habitat management and the cost of monitoring around the clock. One Day of Freedom amounts to *R350* (*$50 or £30).
